In the beauty, makeup, and even fashion industry, you often heard people talk about your skin tone or under skin tone. I mean, we all walk around and try on different pieces of clothing, and jewelry but not all of them look great on us. Some color makes us look all fab and sexy, but some are down right ugly, making us appear more tired and not well rested. So what is undertone? Do your skin have a cool or warm undertone? We all heard it but might not understand it completely. Let’s solve this problem once and for all.
First of, your skin tone on the surface is the skin color that you would describe about yourself as ivory, light, medium, dark, tan, etc. The skin’s undertone is the color underneath the surface. My best friend and I are in the same medium skin tone but I can have a cool undertone while my friend might have a warm undertone. The same color foundation will look completely different on us even though we have the similarity in skin tone.
There are 3 simple categories:
Cool – pink, red, and blue undertone.
Warm – yellow, peach, and golden.
Neutral – a mixture of cool and warm tone.
Now the question is, how do you know?
- The most popular way to determine if you are cool or warm is to check your vein. If they are blue, you have a cool undertone. If they are green, you have a warm undertone. Yellow and blue makes green, so your skin’s undertone color is slightly yellow. If your vein appears to be both bluish-green, you are in the neutral zone.
- Look a your eyes and hair. Cool people have eyes color that are blue, grey, and green; accompany with blond, brown, and black hair. Warm tone people have brown, amber, and hazel eyes color, going along with strawberry blonde, red, brown, and black hair.
- Do you look better in silver jewelry or gold one? Cool undertone looks better in silver and platinum, while warm undertone is way more flattering with gold jewelry.
- When you go to the beach or expose to the sun, does your skin turn golden-brown or burn and turn pink? If you fall in the first case, you are warm. Cool tone tends to burn under the sun.
Determine what colors look best on you:
Warm undertone looks their best with yellow, orange, brown, yellow-green, ivory, and red.
Cool undertone looks best with blue, green, pink, purple, and blue-green.
